Over the years, there’s been a lot of debate about whether visual novels can be considered games. As visual novels mostly consist of text, images, and many clicks to progress the story, a lot of visual novel fans do not consider the media to be included in “games”.

As 2025 is coming to an end, I wanted to share some of my favourite free games that came out this year. Overall, it’s been a great year for not only story and indie games, but free-to-play games of that same category.

No Sleep for Kaname Date is the newest release in the AI: The Somnium Files series, and it does not disappoint. The game excels at everything that the original series is known for: from its fantastic world building to exuberant characters, the game will never leave you bored. While the director for the game is different, being Yamada instead of Uchikoshi, you can see that the love for the Somnium Files series is so prevalent in his work.
